The launching of the Jatropha Biodiesel Processing Facilities, which is a joint project of the PNOC Alternative Fuels Corporation (PNOC-AFC) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) was one of the highlights in the 109th Foundation Anniversary celebration of the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) of the DOST in Bicutan, Taguig City last 26 June 2010. The event was graced by no less than the DOST Secretary Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro with PNOC-AFC president and CEO Lt Gen Romeo P. Tolentino (Ret) sharing the limelight with ITDI Director Dr. Nuna E. Almanzor, who hosted the event.

Witnessed by members of the science community and members of the media, the event showcased the processes involved in the production of jatropha methyl ester from the jatropha seeds as seen live in an actual demonstration made by the DOST technical staff. This is an affirmation to the public that the jatropha biodiesel project does not only promise a cheaper, cleaner, and safer energy source for our next generation but could be a highly competitive energy industry that could propel the country’s economic growth and political stability in the near future.
In a press conference hosted by DOST, the PNOC-AFC president and CEO emphasized the health benefits that the jatropha biodiesel project could bring to the millions of Filipinos who are inflicted with illnesses as a result of too much carbon emission coming from the traditional fossil-based fuels. He also shared with the attendees and the media the advances that the jatropha biodiesel project has undergone and what it plans to undertake as it moves onward to attaining green energy sufficiency for our country and fulfilling PNOC-AFC’s vision of being at the forefront of the global biofuels industry.
