The Philippine National Oil Company – Alternative Fuels Corporation (PNOC-AFC), a subsidiary of the state-owned PNOC, has obtained three certifications from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was the first government-owned and -controlled corporation (GOCC) in the country to be awarded with ISO 9001:2008 for its Industrial Park in Bataan.

"Since 2008, the Company has exerted a great effort to secure a certification from the ISO. The journey towards the certifications has been long and challenging but indeed very fulfilling," said Romeo P. Tolentino, PNOC-AFC president and chief executive officer.
"It is with pride and honor that the PNOC-AFC is sharing the good news that we have obtained three prestigious ISO certifications namely: ISO 9001: 2008, ISO 14001: 2004 and Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001: 2007," noted Tolentino.
Part of the two-pronged mission of the PNOC PNOC-AFC aside from that of the alternative fuels, is the development, operation and management of a globally-competitive industrial hub which caters to the players from the petrochemical industry. One strategic move that the Company has adopted to realize this mission is the development and implementation of the Integrated Management System (IMS) in the PNOC-AFC Industrial Park in Mariveles, Bataan.
Tolentino stressed, "The ISO certification is an important milestone in our Company. The securing of ISO certification would give an assurance to our investors and locators that they were getting quality services from the company's globally-competitive industrial hub."
For the past years, the IMS has become a global trend in various industries to put the quality and standards of each industry into a new dimension. The PNOC-AFC management has envisioned that the IMS will provide the PNOC-AFC Industrial Park its needed boost to transform it into a world-class industrial estate.
Specifically, the IMS will enable the industrial park to demonstrate high levels of quality, thus increasing the existing and future investors' confidence. Aside from the aforesaid, the Quality Management System (QMS) is mandated by Executive Order No. 605 and Administrative Order No. 161, S-2006 directing adoption by government agencies including GOCCs and government financial institutions of QMS.
Tolentino added, "As a Company, we are proud that the PNOC-AFC Industrial Park has embraced the tenet of providing excellent quality services to its clients, with foremost consideration on the health and safety of its people and the surrounding communities, as it shares the global responsibility of protecting the environment.
"The ISO certification symbolized PNOC-AFC's exemplary commitment to quality service in our industrial park in Bataan. Quality service would continue to help the company in maintaining its competitive edge, keeping it in step with globally-accepted practices that promote the satisfaction of its investors and locators," noted Tolentino.
The ISO 9001: 2008 is a QMS intended to control processes thereby ensuring the quality of products and services with main focus on customers' satisfaction while ISO 14001: 2004 is the Environmental Management System aimed at managing environmental aspects, impacts of processes, products and services focusing on pollution prevention. Meantime, OHSAS 18001: 2007 is the Occupational Safety and Health Management System intended to manage the conditions and factors that affect the well-being of the company's employees and other members in the work place with main focus on health and safety of personnel.
The ceremonial awarding of the certificates was held on December 14, 2009 at the Crown Royal Hotel in Balanga City, Bataan and was attended by PNOC president and CEO Antonio M. Cailao, PNOC-AFC president and CEO Romeo P. Tolentino, PNOC-AFC chairman Genaro Rafael K. Alvarez III, Bataan governor Enrique T. Garcia Jr., Mariveles mayor Jesse I.
